Ground rules before the ranking. Vermont Registered Agent.co wrote this page and sells whatever ends up in row one, which makes the part where we review ourselves advertising. Discount it. The prices are straight. All nine were read off the vendors' own published pages in a July 2026 check and reproduced word for word, the one that undercuts us right along with the rest.

Worth sizing up before the table: Vermont charges $155 to form the company and $45 a year to keep it on the rolls. The agent bill is usually the biggest recurring number you pay.

2. Northwest Registered Agent

Shut us down tomorrow and this is where we would tell you to go instead. Real prices on the page. Humans answering phones. Privacy treated as policy long before anyone else made a slogan of it. Two catches. That free year only exists inside a formation order, so agent service bought on its own runs $125 annually. And the $100 rate needs five registrations to unlock, which a Vermont-only business is never getting to. Your real number is $125. Ours is $99. That gap repeats every year you stay.

3. BetterLegal

$90 a year. Lowest published renewal in the table, verified in July, and we are not going to quibble with the arithmetic. The hole is year one, which nobody could find written down anywhere. This page ranks published prices, so a $99 you can read beats a $90 you cannot. Walk their checkout, look at the opening terms, and if they suit you then cheap coverage is exactly what you have found.

4. Rocket Lawyer

$125, identical on every tier, no promotional rate hiding underneath. Honest structure, and rare in this field. The mismatch is what you are actually buying. Rocket Lawyer sells a legal subscription, and the agent service rides along beside contract templates and lawyer time. Use the subscription and $125 makes sense. 5. ZenBusiness

Best interface of the nine, and we will say so plainly. Now read the numbers. Standalone agent purchase: $99 plus state fees in year one, $199 every year after. Year two is where you actually live. An extra hundred dollars every year, forever, for a dashboard most owners sign into about twice.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Incfile with fresh branding, and the offer survived: three to twelve free months of agent service attached to a formation package, depending which package. Free is free. If you were forming through them regardless, take it. Then put the end date in your calendar yourself. Standalone renewal is $149 and the free window closes without ceremony. Most people learn it closed from the charge.

7. LegalZoom

$249, auto-renewing, nothing discounted at the front as of July 2026. Highest flat price in the table. What you are buying is the name, which is a defensible purchase. What you are not buying is better standing in Vermont. Whatever the fee, § 4007 asks three things and only three: an address on a Vermont street, somebody there through the working day, and served papers moved along without delay. None of the three improves when you pay two and a half times what we charge.

8. Swyft Filings

Check the billing period. The $149 is per quarter. Four charges, roughly $596 a year, and no opening discount surfaced to soften it. Most expensive line in the table and it is not close. Small numbers arriving four times feel lighter than one big number arriving once, which is the entire design. For scale: that is nearly four times what the state charges to create the company.

9. Inc Authority

Free first year, undisclosed second. In July 2026 we went through the homepage, the package pages, and the FAQ. No renewal figure printed on any of them. That usually means it gets said out loud on a call. Rank by published price and an unpublished one finishes last by default. The free year is not the issue. The silence following it is.

Vermont's Agent Rules, Short Version

The controlling statute for LLCs is 11 V.S.A. § 4007. What it demands:

• A street address in Vermont. The company continuously maintains an agent with one, for service of process. No box, no virtual suite.
• A qualifying agent. An individual Vermont resident, a domestic corporation, another LLC, or a foreign corporation or foreign LLC authorized to operate here. An entity acting as agent has to be registered and in active status.
• Not the company itself. State guidance requires the agent to be other than the represented business, so your LLC cannot put its own name on that line. A Vermont resident who happens to own the company can be listed personally, as an individual, which is a separate arrangement.

Now the part almost nobody mentions. Vermont splits the agent from the designated office and only pins down the agent. The designated office is allowed to sit outside Vermont. Most states insist on keeping both in state. Here the agent is the local requirement and the office can live wherever you do.

Still forming? Budget $155 for the Articles of Organization. There is no numbered form and no PDF worth hunting for. Vermont runs formations through the Online Business Service Center, online is the preferred method, and nothing extra is charged for using it. One stale number to flag: plenty of guides still print $125 as the Vermont formation fee. It is outdated. The charge today is $155.

Leaving Your Agent Costs $35

A single filing ends any arrangement on this page, ours included. Vermont names it a Statement of Change, prices it at $35, and routes it to the Business Services Division at the Secretary of State's office. No form number to look up, because the filing is online only. The state describes the process on its registered office and agent filings page.

Your outgoing agent gets no vote in the matter. They do hold one card of their own, and it is worth knowing about: an agent may resign at no cost, effective on the 31st day after the state receives the resignation. That leaves a thirty-day stretch where you still technically have an agent who has already stopped caring about your mail. Get the replacement filed before it runs out. Your Report Deadline Moves With Your Fiscal Year

$45 a year, filed online, and the due date is not one the state picks for you. Vermont gives you a three-month run starting the day your fiscal year on record closes. A December 31 year-end means January 1 through March 31. A June 30 year-end means July 1 through September 30. The schedule belongs to your entity, so a generic reminder about "the Vermont deadline" is worthless to anyone who is not a calendar-year filer.

Skip the window and 11 V.S.A. § 4039 permits administrative dissolution, though reinstatement is available if you catch it. Two more things. Older guides still quote $35 for this report; that was the fee before the increase and it will not pay for the filing now. And the report cannot be used to swap your registered agent, which takes the separate $35 change filing described above. Picking One

Nine services, all of them lawful under § 4007, so legality decides nothing. Price does, along with how fast served papers reach you and whether the company was willing to print its renewal at all. The familiar brand runs $249. The $90 is the floor, wrapped around a first year nobody will describe. One bills quarterly. One will not publish.
